What it is, why it happens, and how to fix it before it burns you out

Most founders hit a point in their journey where things don’t quite add up.

Revenue is up.
The team’s growing.
The business looks “successful” from the outside.

But inside?
It feels heavier, messier, and harder to control.

You’re hiring, but still involved in everything.
You’ve got demand, but profits are fragile.
You’re busier than ever, but unsure if the business is actually scalable.

That space between early traction and true scalability is what we call The Growth Gap.

And if you’re in it, you’re not alone.

Why the Growth Gap Happens

Businesses typically hit the Growth Gap somewhere between £750k and £5m turnover.

Why? Because up to that point, growth is usually fuelled by:

  • The founder’s personal energy
  • A small, scrappy team
  • Ad-hoc systems
  • Gut-led decisions
  • Controlled chaos

And it works… until it doesn’t.

Because as revenue increases, so does complexity — and the tools that got you here can’t keep up with where you’re going.

The 5 Signs You’re in the Growth Gap

If any of these sound familiar, you’re likely feeling the squeeze:

1. Time

You’re still at the centre of every major decision. The business slows down when you step back.

2. Team Structure

You’ve hired good people — but roles are unclear, and you’re still the bottleneck.

3. Systems & Execution

Processes live in people’s heads. Things get done, but inconsistently. You’re repeating yourself more than you’d like.

4. Financial Visibility

You’re unsure about margins. Forecasting is patchy. Cash flow feels tight, and you can’t see far enough ahead.

5. Strategic Direction

You’re busy every day — but unsure whether you’re moving forward or running in circles.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

There’s nothing wrong with how you built the business up to now.
But if you want to scale without chaos, your business model, team structure, and financial foundation all need to level up.

That’s why we created the TEAMS Framework.

The TEAMS Framework

Here’s how we help founder-led businesses close the Growth Gap and scale with control:

T – Team Structure
Build leadership capacity. Clarify roles. Free yourself from the day-to-day.

E – Execution
Document your systems. Standardise how things get done across delivery, ops, finance, and sales.

A – Alignment
Make sure your goals, numbers, people, and delivery are all pulling in the same direction.

M – Metrics
Track the right numbers in real time — cash, margin, delivery cost, capacity — not just month-end summaries.

S – Scale
Design the business to grow without adding stress, cost, or chaos.

A Quick Example

We worked with a digital agency turning over £1.7m.
Strong pipeline. Talented team. Flatlining profits.

The founder was firefighting.
Everything ran through them.
Margins were vague. Forecasting was guesswork.

Here’s what we changed:

  • Brought in a part-time FD
  • Built a one-page dashboard tracking margin and cash
  • Restructured ops with clear ownership and reporting lines
  • Set up a monthly leadership rhythm

The result?

The founder stepped out of the weeds, profit improved by 24% and growth became consistent and less stressful.
