A short case study about the moment a business needed more than bookkeeping.

When Sarah joined the leadership team of a specialist manufacturing business, she was surprised by one thing above all else:

No one really knew what was going on with the numbers.

Sure, the finance team was busy.
Invoices were being raised. VAT was submitted. Payroll got done.
But whenever the MD wanted to make a decision — hire someone, invest in equipment, tweak pricing — the conversation would stall.

Corporation tax

Why?
Because the finance team couldn’t answer the big questions.

“Can we afford it?”
“What happens if we push for that tender?”
“What’s our margin on that product line?”
“Is this client actually profitable?”

Every answer was followed by the same disclaimer:

“Let me get back to you.”

And they meant it — but by the time the numbers came through, the decision had already been made. Or worse, not made at all.

The Hidden Cost of “Just Ticking Over”

That finance team wasn’t lazy.
They weren’t incompetent.
They were just set up for compliance, not growth.

It had worked when the business was smaller.
But now, at £3.2m turnover and 38 staff, the decisions were faster, heavier, and riskier.
And the numbers were always playing catch-up.

From Admin to Advisor

We came in to help the business restructure its finance function.
Here’s what changed in 90 days:

  • We introduced a part-time FD to lead forecasting and modelling
  • Built a one-page dashboard with the five numbers that actually mattered
  • Trained the internal team to support scenario planning and pricing reviews
  • Integrated finance into leadership meetings — properly, not just as observers

Modulr, Brightpay and Northern Accountants partnership

The result?

The MD didn’t just have numbers.
He had clarity.
And confidence.
And a finance team that helped him grow the business, not hold it back.

The Point?

Your finance team shouldn’t just tell you what happened.
It should help you decide what to do next.

And if it’s not set up for that, you’ll keep making strategic decisions in the dark.

We’ve built a simple framework to help you work out where your finance function sits today — and what it needs next to support real growth.
