It’s been a hot topic in the world of business over recent months, but with the deadline now confirmed for the Companies House ID verification process, directors and individuals with significant control (PSCs) are being encouraged to act fast.

The Gov.uk website revealed some time ago that: “You need to prove who you are to set up, run, own or control a company in the UK”. The announcements were released in advance, to encourage people to act now, to help avoid delays or complications. However, updates have since been circulated confirming that the deadline for the mandatory ID checks is 18 November 2025.

Who needs to act?

All company directors and PSCs need to verify their identity before a company’s confirmation statement and other statutory documents can be filed.

However, please note that Companies House will only email registered contacts. So:

  • If you have received the email, it is your responsibility to update any other directors and PSCs within your organisation.
  • If you haven’t received the email, but you are a director or PSC, you are still required to verify your identity.

Existing directors and PSCs will have 12 months to complete the process, while any directors or PSCs appointed after 18 November 2025 will need to comply immediately.

Why is it important?

This is a legal requirement. Failure to comply will:

  • Prevent filings from being accepted
  • Risk financial penalties
  • Potentially disqualify individuals from acting as company officers

What do you need to do?

You can verify your ID online via Gov.UK.

If you already have a Government One Login (Gateway ID), the process takes approximately 5 minutes.

If you do not already have a Government One Login (Gateway ID), it takes up to 15 minutes to create one. You can follow this step-by-step process, here.

If you would prefer to verify your ID in person, selected Post Offices offer support with this service, for UK residents only.

What ID is required for this process?

One of the following types of ID will be needed:

  • A biometric passport from any country
  • UK photo driving licence (full or provisional)
  • UK biometric residence permit (BRP)
  • UK biometric residence card (BRC)
  • UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)

When do you need to verify your ID?

While you have until November 18th 2025, we strongly recommend you complete the ID verification process now.

If you’re a Northern Accountant client, please send us a copy of your verification code, once you’ve received it.
