From Gut Feel to Financial Control in Construction

How one Strategy Day helped a £2.2M building business improve margin, reduce stress, and step out of founder-dependency

The Client

Business: Independent Construction Contractor
Turnover: £2.2M
Sector: Residential and commercial builds
Team Size: 15
Engagement: 1-Day Finance Strategy Session

The Challenge

Mark’s construction company was growing fast.

The projects were consistent.
The team was solid.
Revenue had passed the £2 million mark.

But behind the scenes, the numbers didn’t match the effort:

  • Cash flow was unpredictable
  • Pricing was based on gut feel
  • Mark was still involved in every commercial decision
  • Profitability varied wildly between jobs, and no one could say why
  • Finance existed, but it wasn’t strategic

Mark wasn’t failing.
He’d simply outgrown the systems that had worked in the early days.

“We were turning over more, but I was more stressed than ever.”

The Solution: A Focused Strategy Day

We worked with Mark and his team in a single-day intensive session, designed specifically for founder-led businesses that need to scale with structure, not more guesswork.

The day was built around three priorities:

  • Understanding the real cost of delivery
  • Gaining control over margin and cash flow
  • Reducing founder dependency on every financial decision

What We Delivered

By the end of the session, Mark had:

  • A project-level margin model across service types
  • Visibility over subcontractor and labour costs per job
  • A 12-week rolling cash flow forecast
  • A weekly dashboard covering cash, margin, and work in progress
  • A new team rhythm to support financial decisions without Mark as the middleman

“It was the first time I could see the business clearly, not just react to it.”

The Results (within 90 days)

  • Net margin improved by 18%
  • Mark stopped pricing based on gut feel
  • Cash planning became proactive, not reactive
  • Site managers began owning cost performance
  • Mark stopped checking the bank balance every weekend

Most importantly:

“I finally felt like a business owner, not a bottleneck.”

Why It Worked

Mark didn’t need more turnover.
He didn’t need to hire a CFO.
He just needed structure — and a team that could act without him.

That’s what our Finance Strategy Day is built to do.
