How a construction firm went from reactive to strategic in one focused day

When Mark launched his construction business, things moved quickly.

The first two years were a blur of winning work, expanding the team, and hitting record months.
Clients were happy.
Revenue was growing.
Projects were lining up back-to-back.

But beneath the surface, something was off.

Mark couldn’t explain exactly why he felt uneasy.
He just knew one thing:

“The numbers never seem to line up with the effort.”

The Reality Behind the Growth

Mark’s team had grown to 15.
Turnover had passed £2.2 million.
On paper, the business looked solid.

But…

  • Cash flow was unpredictable
  • He was still pricing most jobs himself
  • No one could say which jobs were actually profitable
  • Every big decision — hiring, equipment, subcontracting — came through him

The accountant handled compliance.
The bookkeeper did the basics.
But Mark still made every commercial call based on gut feel and guesswork.

And the pressure was growing.

The Turning Point: One Strategy Day

Mark came to us for a Strategy Day.

He didn’t want theory.
He wanted clarity.
He wanted to stop feeling like the whole business sat on his shoulders.

So in one focused session, we worked with him to:

Build a margin model by project type
Track delivery cost (including internal labour and subcontractor use)
Set up a real-time cash forecast
Identify where jobs were over- or underperforming
Create a dashboard that gave him real financial control

The Impact — In Less Than 90 Days

Within three months:

  • He stopped pricing projects on gut feel
  • His site manager had access to cost tracking tools
  • Overhead was reduced by reallocating resource
  • Net margin improved by 18%
  • And for the first time, Mark didn’t have to review the bank balance every weekend

But most importantly?

“I finally feel like a business owner — not a firefighter.”

Why It Worked

Mark didn’t need a full-time FD.
He didn’t need complex software.
He just needed to:

  • See where the money was actually going
  • Stop making decisions alone
  • And build a simple system that turned financial noise into usable insight

That’s exactly what our Strategy Day is designed for.
