Role Overview

The role of our Accounting Technician is a key role within our Full Finance Function where we look after all aspects of our client’s financial requirements. As part of the role, you would be expected to perform a wide range of accounting activities in line with your AAT Level 3 qualifications or equivalent.

The Following is a more detailed description of responsibilities within the role.

Bookkeeping

The core of the role is centred around our Bookkeeping services. Practice experience is essential to perform the functions of this role effectively. As an Accounting Technician, you must be able to demonstrate experience and understanding of the following areas;

  • Processing client paperwork
  • Bank reconciliations
  • A clear understanding of posting to nominal codes
  • Basic VAT Treatment knowledge
  • Processing of CIS Suffered and CIS Stopped
  • Understanding of the key accounting reports; P&L, Balance Sheet, Aged payables, Aged Receivables
  • Posting wage journals

For all of the above activities, the Accounting Technician must ensure they have a clear and demonstrable understanding of all the deadlines set by HMRC and Companies House, as well as deadlines that are set internally to meet delivery targets. A thorough understanding of HMRC and Companies house together with experience working with them is essential for this role.

Planning

Another key aspect of the role is the ability to manage deadlines and communicate effectively. The business operates a deadline driven environment in order to produce month-end management information for all clients. Bookkeeping is conducted weekly across teams, of which, the Accounting Technician is responsible for delivery of clients they actively look after, and those where Bookkeeping is processed on their behalf. It is therefore essential that the Accounting Technician is able to;

  • Manage workloads
  • Schedule work to ensure deadlines are hit
  • Support colleagues with Bookkeeping queries
  • Communicate effectively with clients

XERO Support

Northern Accountants is a Platinum Partner of XERO and, as such, the majority of the client base are XERO users. For clients who perform Bookkeeping in house, Northern Accountants offer XERO support as part of the service. A key part of the Accounting Technician role is to be the first point of call to support and assist where possible.

On-Site Services

The vast majority of the processing work is conducted in house using exclusively cloud-based technology. Where certain clients have bespoke systems, it may be necessary to conduct certain activities on site.

Administration

As part of the role, the Accounting Technician will provide administrative support to all areas of the business where applicable. Examples of such work include;

  • Managing shared inboxes
  • Managing Inbound Phone Calls
  • New client transitions
  • Ad hoc projects

Marketing

All members of the team are actively encouraged to participate in the marketing activities of the business. Examples of where the Accounting Technician would be able to support the Marketing effort are as follows;

  • Providing client feedback
  • Creating content for the marketing team by providing FAQ
  • Ensuring you deliver exceptional client service at every opportunity
  • Involvement with improvement projects

Personal and Professional Development

Any member of the Northern Accountants team is actively encouraged to pursue personal and professional development. This may be through professional training, any number of accredited courses provided by our third-party partners, or reading a book from the NA Library. It may be something entirely different that you have decided to pursue for the purpose of betterment. You will be given full support and guidance to help you achieve your development goals which are managed predominantly as part of your monthly review.

Key Skills

  • AAT Level 3 qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of working in Accounting Practice
